Areas of Concentration

These courses have been organized into five areas of concentration: Blended Learning, College and Career Readiness, Data Driven Decision Making, Diverse Learners, and New Teacher Induction and Leadership.

The Blended Learning collection of courses provides a multitude of learning opportunities in which a student learns strategies to deliver content and instruction via digital and online media with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace. While still attending a “brick-and-mortar” school structure, face-to-face classroom methods are combined with computer-mediated activities.

The Diverse Learners concentration area provides a multitude of teaching opportunities and strategies shown by research to be effective in educating diverse student learners. Diverse student learners include students from racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse families and communities of lower socioeconomic status. If educators act on the knowledge research offers, we can realize the educational excellence we desire for all children.

This concentration area also includes courses on differentiated instruction. Teachers learn how to develop a student’s ability to relate to differentiated teaching and assessing through multiple intelligences in order to provide a rationale for using alternative assessment techniques currently popular in reform-based education. At the completion of the course the learners will have gained more knowledge in the following areas: differentiated instruction, teaching in a mixed ability classroom, and classroom management.

It’s no secret that modern schools often require a special level of effort on the part of teachers in order for students to achieve their highest potential. Teachers need to be proficient at managing their classrooms and have the tools necessary to manage today’s sometimes-unpredictable student groups. Learners will explore proven classroom practices with the goal of ensuring instructional activities are valuable and accessible to all students.

Many districts find that new teachers are not adequately prepared to be effective in the classroom. PCG’s KDS online courses can enhance district programs to support new teacher growth and development. By providing new teachers with strategies and tools, teachers build capacity to navigate the school environment, manage their classrooms, work with parents and build a professional growth plan.

The KDS catalog also includes courses for returning principals, school leaders, and instructional coaches to continue building their leadership capacity. School and district leaders can learn directly from experts including Anthony Muhammad, Learning Forward/Joellen Killion, Richard Dufour, and TERC/Diana Nunnaley. The online format provides convenient, any-time access to experts without having to leave school buildings, while also assuring fidelity of instruction, at scale.

The KDS courses from PCG provide an option for my teachers and leadership team to access PD without leaving our school. The online format is convenient, and the online coaches and course materials keep the learning engaging. It gives my staff access to hear directly from education rock stars! A great alternative to onsite workshops.
